Can I start a business if I owe taxes?

Even if you owe taxes, you can still incorporate your business. Both corporations and LLC business structures allow business owners to separate and protect their personal assets. From a tax standpoint, it’s much easier to do your taxes if your expenses for your business are separated from your personal expenses.

What if I can’t pay my business taxes?

Business. If you can’t pay your tax bill in 90 days and want to get on a payment plan, you can apply for an installment agreement. It may take up to 60 days to process your request. Typically, you will have up to 12 months to pay off your balance.

Can you start a business if you owe back taxes?

AFAIK there isn’t anything that would prevent you from starting a business. Simply owing back taxes shouldn’t make a difference on how you make money, whether that is working for yourself or someone else. All the IRS is concerned about at this point is that you still owe them.

Can a back tax lien cause a lien?

Since you currently owe ~$8,000 over the past 3 years, it is possible that adding another year in back taxes will cause the IRS to file a lien if they have not yet already done so. So it may be something to keep an eye on if you do plan on taking out a loan for your business. It is the presupposition that makes this a rather ridiculous question.

Do you have to pay the IRS if you are an unincorporated business?

As an unincorporated business the IRS does not stop you from gaining an additional source of income to pay them with. Perhaps lenders might not help you with capital. As an incorporated business no state is going to ask you if you “owe back taxes” before they allow you to pay them to register your business in their state.

Can a tax lien make it harder to get a license?

If forced collection is necessary, this may also mar your credit report. This, in turn, could make it difficult to be licensed with your state. In some instances, you may still have a tax lien and obtain a license. Your state may allow you to obtain the license if you agree to a payment arrangement before obtaining your license.
