As a rule of thumb, the size of a softbox should be approximately the same size as your subject; meaning a head shot or half shot could require softboxes in the range of about 18 to 24″, whereas full-body shots could require multiple softboxes in the 48″ or larger range.

Can I use LED bulbs in softbox?
I have personally thrown a flexible LED panel inside a softbox. The quality of light is more than decent, and above all it’s a rather cheap option if you already own softboxes. In fact you could even pick up a cheap set, plus these bulbs for about $100.
Can you use regular light bulbs in a softbox?
The photo bulbs are much brighter than the LED’s (with the same fitting A19) and CFL’s, so you only need one bulb in your softbox to get 500 watts compared to 4 or 5 LED’s, or CFL’s to get the same brightness.
Does softbox shape matter?
A soft box is usually rectangular, but it can be any shape; in fact, the shape of your light bank/soft box (same thing, really) can make a big difference in shaping the quality of your portrait photography lighting. Umbrellas usually have 16-ribs, so light quality is not quite the same as an octagonal softbox.

They are black on the sides to prevent light from spilling out and have a white diffusion panel to soften the light on the front. Does Bowens mount work on alien bees?
