How do I know if my crankcase breather is bad?

Symptoms of a bad BMW CCV are: white smoke coming out of the exhaust, excessive oil consumption (burning oil), engine running rough and misfiring. Failure of the BMW crankcase vent valve creates a vacuum from air being sucked through the rear main seal.

How does BMW crankcase ventilation work?

BMWs crankcase ventilation system is in place in order to relieve pressure off the crankcase and to redirect combustion gases. This works by separating the liquid oil from the air that is inside the engine as well as the intake manifold.

What causes oil to come out of crankcase breather?

If the engine is producing blow-by gases faster than the PCV system can dispose of them, an increasing surplus becomes trapped in the crankcase, causing excess pressure and, inevitably, oil leaks. In addition, the low-level vacuum draws in fresh air to the crankcase from the crankcase breather.

What is a breather valve in an engine?

Every internal combustion engine — including a two- or four-cycle lawnmower engine — needs a way to vent gases from the combustion chamber. A breather tube is part of a positive crankcase ventilation system that usually includes a one-way valve that prevents exhaust gases from cycling back into the engine.

What happens when PCV valve fails?

As the PCV valve starts going bad, the performance of your vehicle will get worse. This can be exhibited by a buildup of pressure in the exhaust or the engine could stall out. When this happens, the fuel and air mixture is diluted causing your vehicle to run poorly and lean out.

Can you run a car without a PCV valve?

If you need to drive a couple miles to get the parts needed then plug the vacuum side of PCV line and it may be okay to drive a short distance since running longer than this may cause the pressure to build up in the crankcase and cause oil leaks and engine will run lean or rich without a properly functioning PCV system …

Where is the crankshaft breather valve located?

The breather valve is located below the intake manifold, behind the throttle housing mount surface. When replacing your crankcase breather valve, I suggest replacing all the vent hoses and the oil drain hose to the dipstick tube.

How do you install a crankcase breather hose?

Install the crankcase breather valve and tighten the fasteners. Install the new drain hose (green arrow) to the bottom of the crankcase breather valve. Next, install the crankcase breather hose (purple hose) to the breather valve.

Inspect the crankcase drain hole and confirm it is clear of obstructions. You can use a piece of stiff wire to check, but there is an internal baffle locate inside (green arrow) so do not expect the wire to pop out the other side. Next, you will be working at the crankcase breather valve.

Where is the breather valve located on a Chevy Silverado?

The breather valve is located below the intake manifold, behind the throttle housing mount surface. When replacing your crankcase breather valve, I suggest replacing all the vent hoses and the oil drain hose to the dipstick tube. They become brittle over time from exposure to engine oil and heat.
