My philosophy has always been not to look for new solutions to problems I don’t have, and especially problems others want to convince me I have.

Do I need the eww01 to power the Di2 system?

It is powered by the same Di2 battery that powers the Di2 shifting system. Battery options can be either External or Internal. In order to take full advantage of the Di2 system, the EWW01 is required. Is it necessary? No, but its a really nice to have and a great training aid.

Will Shimano ever make a completely wireless shifting system?

How does the Shimano D-fly work?

Via the Shimano D-Fly proprietary private ANT wireless protocol, this unit transmits Di2 gear position, battery life, as well as some other common rider data functions that can be received and then displayed on the Garmin Edge 1000 and/or the Magellan Cyclo 505. It is powered by the same Di2 battery that powers the Di2 shifting system.
