The dome was enlarged as part of a project to expand the Statehouse during the Civil War. It was modeled after the 17th-century dome on top of the church of the Hotel des Invalides in Paris. In contrast to many public buildings, the NH state house remains open and welcoming. Volunteer greeters met us at the entrance, and we chose to guide ourselves. To the right is a souvenir shop that doubles as an historic site in itself.
