What does a cam phaser do?

One or more camshaft actuators—also known as camshaft phasers—act as the heart of the VVT system. When conditions are correct, the phasers alter the position of the camshafts to adjust the engine’s valve timing. Although camshaft phasers sound great in theory, they’re a common failure point on many modern engines.

When did Ford fix the 5.4 Cam Phaser problem?

2004 – 2010 Ford F-150 (5.4) This generation of F-150 is probably the most well known vehicle to have this issue. It ranged all the way from the 2004 F-150 after its redesign, all the way into the next generation until they moved away from the 5.4, instead moving to the 5.0 that replaced it in 2011.

Where are the cam phasers located?

Phasers can be found just on the exhaust cam or on both the intake and exhaust cams. The alteration of camshaft position changes the cam centerline and the lobe separation angle between intake and exhaust cams. This allows engineers to improve fuel economy and power while continuing to meet emissions standards.

What year was the best 5.4 engine?

2009-2010 Triton 5.4L The 5.4-liter V8 improved in 2009, fixing the cam phaser issues and all but eliminating the spark plug problems. With 300 horsepower and 365 lb-ft of torque, the Triton 5.4L is one of the most reliable F150 engines.

Can timing chain cause knocking?

If you hear rattling from the front of the engine, you could be dealing with a loose timing chain. The chain may be loose because it’s stretched or because a guide or tensioner has failed. In some cases, the chain will end up hitting the timing cover, resulting in a loud clattering noise.

Is the 5.4 Triton a good motor?

5.4L Triton Common Engine Problems Power comes in at 235-550 horsepower and 330-510 torque. Output greatly depends on the year and model. Nonetheless, the performance numbers are impressive for the era the 5.4L engine was released. It’s a solid overall engine and won a handful of Ward’s 10 Best Engine awards.
