What does a trail crew do?
Working on a trail crew includes a bunch of different tasks, but the main ones are improving access to parks and forests, working to reduce environmental impact of increased visitation and conserving areas for future generations by building long lasting, well built trail systems to beautiful parts of our country.
How do you become a trail crew?
You can participate if you are in good physical condition and are at least 18 years of age or accompanied by an adult. No previous trail building experience is required. If you are new to the Trail Crew and are thinking of attending a Day Trip, Base Camp or Back Packing event, each event offers a different experience.

FOF Trail Patrol observed over 36,221 hikers, 7,283 bikers and 83 equestrians. Patrollers removed 682 pounds of trash and hiked over 9,823 miles.
What is trail work?
Trail work is a team effort and as such, the team is sharing some of the risk associated with working in remote locations, so even one unprepared crewmember can have a serious affect on the team.

Is trail work hard?
Paid trail work is by nature, a tough job but that difficulty is also one of its greatest qualities. But I’d also say that committing a chunk of time to maintaining the trail can be equally profound, with the added bonus of improving the experience of everyone that does hike or ride it.

Blazes: signs used to mark the route of the trail, usually painted at regular intervals on trees and rocks along the way. Blowdowns: trees that have been toppled by the wind.
