What is a root tip extraction?

An apicoectomy is a surgery that involves the root tip, or the “apex” of the tooth root. The term “ectomy” means to excise, or cut. During this procedure the area around the root tip is also cleaned to remove any abnormal tissue or cystic formations.

During this surgical procedure an endodontist will remove the root tip to treat the infection or inflammation. This procedure is a little more in-depth than just getting a root canal as we will need to reveal the jawbone in order to access and remove the apex.

Naturally, you will feel sore, swollen and bruised after major dental surgery such as retained root removal. You may also feel stiff around the mouth and experience an ache when eating or talking for a few days. The bruising and swelling will subside in around a week to ten days.

A root tip resection will be performed to prevent the reoccurence of the cyst from remaining parts of the root sheath. Cysts are diagnosed in an x-ray picture as a light area around the root tip (a so-called apical radiolucency).
