What is cytoplasmic blebbing?

Blebbing is one of the defined features of apoptosis. During apoptosis (programmed cell death), the cell’s cytoskeleton breaks up and causes the membrane to bulge outward. These bulges may separate from the cell, taking a portion of cytoplasm with them, to become known as apoptotic blebs.

What causes cell Blebbing?

Blebs are protrusions of the cell membrane. They are the result of actomyosin contractions of the cortex, which cause either transient detachment of the cell membrane from the actin cortex or a rupture in the actin cortex. Then, cytosol streams out of the cell body and inflates the newly formed bleb.

What is cell shrinkage?

Cell shrinkage, or the loss of cell volume, is a ubiqui- tous characteristic of programmed cell death that is observed in all examples of apoptosis, independent of the death stimulus. This decrease in cell volume occurs in synchrony with other classical features of apoptosis.
