What kind of fabric is Coutil?
Coutil is a strong cotton fabric made with a twill weave. It’s often confused with duck, or canvas, but duck is basket-weave and canvas is a balanced plain-weave. Coutil is usually made in solid black or white.
How big should corset grommets be?
Rule: Grommets in a corset should be size #00 (5mm) or #0 (6mm) and have a medium-to-wide flange to prevent popping out over time.
How many eyelets should a corset have?
You need two part eyelets because the washer part of the eyelet, sandwiches and encloses the fabric safely and ensures a smooth finish to the inside of the corset. One part eyelets which do not come with a washer, are not strong enough for corsetry.
Is coutil breathable?
The reason coutil is special is because it is a very densly woven fabric which makes it very strong and durable – able to stand up to tension, but can be very smooth and luxurious. I do not recommend those as they do not ‘breathe’ as well as natural fabrics.
Can coutil be washed?
Long answer: Coutil is a specialist corsetry fabric which contains something called “size”. If you wash the coutil you will wash out all the size, and the coutil will not be stiff and firm as it should be and it’s the characteristics of firm coutil which make it such a pleasure to use for making corsets.

How open should a corset be in the back?
A 1-3 inch gap is generally fine for many people and it won’t offset the seams of an OTR corset or the intended fit too much, even if your weight fluctuates by an estimated 5-10 pounds. One guideline for the maximum gap in the back of the corset is the distance between your Venus Dimples.
