To cause the diarrheal disease cholera, Vibrio cholerae must effectively colonize the small intestine. In order to do so, the bacterium needs to successfully travel through the stomach and withstand the presence of agents such as bile and antimicrobial peptides in the intestinal lumen and mucus.

Can you get cholera from shellfish?

A person can get cholera by drinking water or eating food contaminated with the cholera bacterium. Large epidemics are often related to fecal contamination of water supplies or street vended foods. The disease is occasionally spread through eating raw or undercooked shellfish that are naturally contaminated.

What is the difference between cholera and dysentery?

Cholera spreads rapidly in areas where drinking water is contaminated. That was the problem for those on the Oregon Trail just as it was in Haiti. Dysentery is also a diarrheal illness and is often caused by Shigella species (bacillary dysentery) or Entamoeba histolytica (amoebic dysentery).
